Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia is now accepting applications for an Alternative to Suspension Teacher position that is available for the 2026-2027 school year .
Primary Responsibilities:
The Alternative to Suspension (ATS) Teacher provides high-quality instruction and restorative support to students assigned to the division’s alternative placement center in lieu of a 10-day suspension. This position ensures that students remain engaged in rigorous academic work aligned with their home school curriculum while also addressing the behaviors that led to their placement. The ATS Teacher plays a critical role in helping students maintain academic progress, rebuild relationships, learn pro-social skills, and successfully transition back to their school community.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Hold or be eligible to hold a valid Virginia teaching license
- Demonstrated ability to deliver rigorous, differentiated instruction across multiple content areas
- Experience working with adolescents exhibiting behavioral challenges
- Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to build trusting relationships with students
Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, de-escalation strategies, and restorative approaches
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in alternative education, special education, counseling, or behavioral support
- Training or certification in Restorative Practices, PBIS, SEL, or conflict-resolution programs
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Academic Instruction and Support
- Provide rigorous, standards-aligned instruction across core content areas using materials and assignments provided by the student’s home school teachers
- Adapt assignments as needed to ensure accessibility while maintaining high expectations and academic integrity
- Monitor student progress, assess understanding, and provide individualized support, tutoring, and feedback
- Maintain communication with home school teachers to ensure continuity of learning and accurate submission of completed work
Support students in meeting deadlines, developing study habits, and demonstrating accountability for academic tasks
Restorative Practices and Behavior Support
- Facilitate structured restorative conversations, reflection activities, and problem-solving sessions related to the student’s behavior
- Guide students in identifying the impact of their actions, rebuilding relationships, and developing strategies to prevent repeated behavior
- Teach and model social-emotional skills such as self-regulation, conflict resolution, decision-making, and communication
- Collaborate with administrators, counselors, and behavior specialists to create and implement individualized behavior support plans
Document restorative work and track student growth toward behavioral goals
Environment and Student Management
- Create a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment that promotes respect, responsibility, and productivity
- Utilize trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices when working with students
- Implement division-approved behavior expectations, consequences, and supports consistently
Maintain accurate attendance, behavior logs, and academic completion records
Collaboration and Communication
- Maintain regular communication with school administrators, counselors, and classroom teachers to ensure alignment of expectations and support
- Provide progress updates and reintegration recommendations to the student’s home school
Participate in team meetings, professional learning, and training related to restorative practices, behavior intervention, and instructional strategies
FLSA Status: Exempt
SALARY: $53,889.00 – $87,325.91 annually; with benefits; commensurate with experience

MCPS is currently the only school division in Southwest Virginia with a collective bargaining agreement.
