About the Organization
Clean and Healthy California (formerly Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California) exists to protect Californians from the fiscal, health, and environmental impacts of Big Oil, while advancing an equitable transition to a clean energy future and away from the waning oil production that currently exists. It is a social welfare and political advocacy organization focused on supporting environmental leaders, health professionals and community organizations holding Big Oil accountable, ensuring that California’s clean energy transition uplifts all communities – especially those most burdened by pollution and inequity.

Position Overview
The Executive Director (ED) will serve as the strategic and operational leader of Clean and Healthy California, responsible for advancing its mission across California. The ED will drive statewide policy and advocacy campaigns, lead political engagement efforts, build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, oversee organizational operations and fundraising, and ensure that the organization remains a trusted, effective voice for environmental justice, public health, and clean energy transition.
This is a high-profile position that requires vision, coalition-building, political acumen, and a deep commitment to equity and environmental justice.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the development and execution of the organization’s strategic plan to achieve bold, measurable progress toward Big Oil accountability and an equitable clean energy transition.
- Serve as the primary spokesperson and thought leader for the organization before policymakers, media, partners, and the public.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and shared purpose across staff, partners, and the Board.
Policy & Advocacy
- Shape and advance the organization’s statewide policy priorities, including legislative, regulatory, and public education efforts.
- Build strategic alliances with environmental justice groups, labor partners, public health advocates, local governments, and community-based organizations.
- Represent the organization in key coalitions and campaigns, ensuring alignment with community-driven priorities and environmental justice principles.
- Raise support for the organization’s advocacy agenda, including close collaboration with the organization’s fundraiser.
Organizational Management
- Manage a growing team of policy, political, communications, and operations professionals.
- Develop and oversee the annual budget, ensuring strong fiscal stewardship and transparency, including developing and managing a political giving platform.
- Report regularly to the Board of Directors on progress toward strategic goals, organizational health, and key policy outcomes.
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit, government, or advocacy leadership, including staff and budget management.
- Demonstrated success leading policy or advocacy initiatives in California, particularly in climate, environmental justice, or public health arenas.
