Responsibilities
- Safely operate commercial vehicles such as school buses, transit buses, and paratransit vans in accordance with traffic laws and transportation safety regulations
- Assist passengers with wheelchair assistance, child safety seats, and other mobility needs while maintaining passenger comfort and security
- Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR, first aid, and emergency stop procedures when necessary
- Ensure adherence to school policies, student discipline protocols, and behavior management standards during routes
- Conduct vehicle inspections before and after trips to identify mechanical issues; perform basic mechanical knowledge checks as needed
- Communicate effectively with passengers using clear English or bilingual skills; respond promptly to traffic changes or route adjustments
- Maintain accurate records of trips, passenger counts, incident reports, and vehicle logs in compliance with state and local laws
Qualifications
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for bus operation
- Proven experience driving buses or similar large vehicles; experience working with children or seniors is highly desirable
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and emergency response procedures for transportation
- Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse communities
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting passengers or handling equipment; physical stamina required for long shifts
- Familiarity with student discipline policies, behavior management techniques, and child or senior care practices
- Basic first aid certification including CPR; training in emergency stop procedures is preferred
- Mechanical knowledge related to vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting is advantageous
