Senior Director, Business Development – California – Integrated Drug Discovery CRO
CDC are proud to be working with a leading integrated drug discovery CRO, founded 15 years ago in Europe. They are expanding its US commercial footprint and we are looking for a Senior Director of Business Development to build and own the California territory.
This is a hunter role, not a farmer role. You'll be the face of the company on the West Coast – identifying, engaging, and closing new integrated drug discovery partnerships with biotech and pharma companies. You'll work closely with the scientific leadership to shape proposals and translate client needs into winning integrated programs, and you'll have real autonomy to build the territory as your own.
Responsibilities
- Build and manage a new business pipeline of small molecule drug discovery opportunities across California, with a focus on the Bay Area biotech ecosystem
- Prospect, cold outreach, and network your way into target validation, hit-to-lead, and lead optimisation conversations at emerging and established biotechs
- Represent client at key industry conferences and partnering events
- Work cross-functionally with the scientific and project management teams in Europe to scope proposals and convert opportunities into signed contracts
- Own the full sales cycle from lead generation through to deal close
- Report on pipeline, forecasting, and market intelligence to senior leadership
Requirements
- 5+ years of business development experience within a small molecule CRO or CDMO – this is non-negotiable
- An established network across California biotech and pharma, ideally with strong existing relationships in the Bay Area
- A genuine hunter mentality, proven track record of sourcing and closing new logo business, not just managing existing accounts
- A chemistry-related degree is preferred
- Comfortable working with a European HQ and time zone, and confident representing a science-led, reputation-driven CRO in a competitive US market
