As a GIS / Mapping Specialist, you'd help us create training data for a project with one of the world's top AI labs.
Your role:
As a GIS / Mapping Specialist, you will apply your professional experience in spatial analysis and cartography to help design, execute, and evaluate realistic GIS workflows. The core objective of this role is to translate real, day-to-day geospatial reasoning into structured tasks and evaluations, enabling AI systems to learn how experienced GIS analysts and cartographers conduct analysis and produce publication-ready maps.
Compensation:
- Compensation: $50-70/hour
- Commitment: 15-40 hours per week
- Type: Contract, part-time
- Location: Fully remote
What you'll do:
- Execute tasks within QGIS to validate feasibility and establish ground-truth solutions
- Write detailed task specifications for GIS and cartographic workflows, including clear prompts, expected outputs, and grading criteria
- Conduct spatial analyses, manage vector and raster layers, handle coordinate reference systems, and compose publication-ready map layouts
- Define grading rubrics that assess both technical execution (e.g., correct projections, valid geoprocessing outputs) and cartographic judgment (e.g., symbology hierarchy, legend design, layout balance)
- Provide clear, written documentation of your workflows, reasoning, and quality assessments
What we're looking for:
We are specifically seeking experienced GIS analysts and cartographers with strong spatial analysis skills and hands-on production experience.
Relevant Backgrounds:
- Proficiency and fluency with QGIS, ArcGIS, or similar GIS platforms
- GIS analysts, cartographers, or spatial data scientists working in government, consulting, or industry
- Freelance mapping professionals with a portfolio of thematic maps or spatial analyses
- Hands-on experience with coordinate systems, geoprocessing tools, raster/vector analysis, and map composition
- Familiarity with cartographic design principles and publication-ready deliverables
