Role Description
The Human Resources Generalist is an onsite position based in Washington, DC. This role supports the day-to-day HR operations of the company and assists with recruiting, payroll coordination, onboarding, offboarding, employee records, compliance, and general HR administration.
The HR Generalist will help manage employee onboarding and offboarding processes, maintain accurate personnel records, support payroll preparation, assist with time and attendance tracking, and help ensure compliance with company policies and applicable employment laws. This position will also support benefits and leave administration, employee communications, HR reporting, and routine employee inquiries.
Daily responsibilities may include posting job openings, screening resumes, coordinating interviews, assisting with candidate communications, preparing onboarding documents, maintaining HR files, updating HR systems, supporting payroll and benefits processes, and assisting managers with routine employee relations matters. The role may also help coordinate training, performance review processes, employee engagement activities, and other HR-related projects as needed.
This is a hands-on position that requires strong organization, confidentiality, follow-through, and the ability to support employees and managers in a professional and service-focused manner.
Key Responsibilities
- Support recruiting efforts, including job postings, resume screening, interview coordination, candidate follow-up, and reference checks.
- Coordinate employee onboarding, including new hire paperwork, system setup, orientation support, and compliance documentation.
- Assist with employee offboarding, including exit paperwork, final coordination, equipment return tracking, and record updates.
- Maintain employee personnel files and HR records in an accurate, organized, and confidential manner.
- Support payroll processes by tracking time and attendance, reviewing payroll-related information, and coordinating with finance or external payroll providers.
- Assist with benefits administration, leave tracking, and employee questions related to benefits or company policies.
- Update HR systems and spreadsheets to track employee information, recruiting activity, compliance items, and HR metrics.
- Prepare HR reports and assist with audits, compliance reviews, and documentation requests.
- Respond to employee and manager inquiries in a timely, professional, and consistent manner.
- Support training, performance reviews, employee engagement initiatives, and other HR projects.
- Assist with maintaining and updating HR policies, procedures, forms, and internal communications.
- Perform other HR and administrative duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Experience supporting core HR operations, including recruiting, onboarding, offboarding, employee records management, and HR administration.
- Knowledge of employment laws and regulations, with experience supporting compliance, documentation, and audit-ready HR processes.
- Experience supporting payroll coordination, time and attendance tracking, benefits administration, and leave administration.
- Proficiency with HRIS or HR management systems, spreadsheets, and reporting tools.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to support employees and managers at all levels of the organization.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
- High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality when handling sensitive employee information.
- Prior experience with recruitment support, including job postings, candidate screening, interview scheduling, and candidate communications.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- HR certification, such as SHRM-CP or PHR, is a plus.
- Experience in real estate, facilities, logistics, government contracting, or professional services is a plus.
