About the role
The position is at a nonprofit. The Manager, People Operations serves as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert in compensation, total rewards, and HR operations. This role is responsible for developing equitable and competitive compensation programs, maintaining compliant and scalable HR operations, and ensuring People practices reflect the organization's mission and values.
Working closely with the Director, HRBP, the Manager translates business priorities into practical, data-driven HR solutions while supporting an exceptional employee experience.
Responsibilities
Total Rewards & Compensation Management—60%
- Develop, administer, and continuously enhance compensation programs, including salary structures, job leveling, geographic pay differentials, and annual merit review cycles.
- Align the organization's total rewards philosophy with our mission by ensuring compensation, recognition, and benefits programs reinforce principles of equity, fairness, and employee well-being.
- Lead annual compensation initiatives, including market benchmarking, pay equity analysis, and merit planning.
- Analyze compensation survey data from sources such as Mercer, Radford, WTW, and nonprofit salary benchmarks to support competitive pay practices.
- Conduct ongoing pay equity assessments and recommend corrective actions where appropriate.
- Partner with Human Resources and Finance to develop compensation models supporting hiring, promotions, and workforce planning.
- Design and maintain job architecture frameworks, including job families, career levels, and salary grades.
- Advise hiring managers on compensation recommendations that promote internal equity, consistency, and budget alignment.
- Develop and deliver total rewards communications tailored to executive leadership, managers, employees, and candidates, ensuring transparency and understanding.
- Support the design, implementation, and administration of employee recognition and incentive programs.
Employment Law Compliance & Employee Relations—30%
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws by maintaining audit-ready HR processes and documentation.
- Identify trends within employee relations matters and recommend proactive solutions that strengthen manager capability and reduce organizational risk.
- Manage HR compliance initiatives, including audits, policy documentation, and corrective action processes.
- Develop, review, and maintain HR policies that align with legal requirements and industry best practices.
- Provide guidance to managers and employees on employee relations issues, including policy interpretation, performance management, workplace concerns, and documentation, escalating complex situations as appropriate.
- Partner with HRBP leadership to support sensitive employee relations cases by preparing documentation, timelines, and objective analysis.
- Promote the fair and consistent application of HR policies across the organization while ensuring legal compliance and organizational consistency.
HR Operations & Operational Excellence—10%
- Advise hiring managers on recruitment processes to ensure consistency, fairness, and compliance throughout the hiring process.
- Provide guidance to managers and employees on HR policies, procedures, and compliance requirements while reinforcing accountability.
- Identify and implement process improvements that increase operational efficiency, accuracy, and the overall employee experience.
- Support new hire onboarding by educating employees on compensation programs, benefits, and the organization's total rewards philosophy.
- Maintain HRIS data accuracy through regular audits, reporting, and issue resolution to ensure reliable workforce information.
- Generate workforce analytics and HR reports while partnering with the Director, HRBP to develop dashboards and actionable business insights.
- Lead and contribute to People Operations initiatives that strengthen compliance, scalability, operational effectiveness, and process improvements.
- Analyze workforce trends to proactively identify challenges and provide practical, people-focused recommendations to leadership.
Experience / Qualifications
Skills, Experience, & Knowledge
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 5+ years of progressive Human Resources experience with significant expertise in compensation, employee relations, and HR operations.
- Demonstrated commitment to our mission and values, with experience developing compensation and HR programs that promote equity, fairness, and employee well-being.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret workforce data, identify pay equity concerns, employee relations trends, and broader organizational insights.
- Experience designing and implementing compensation structures, job architecture frameworks, career leveling systems, salary bands, or pay equity methodologies.
- Experience supporting organizations with pay transparency initiatives and effectively communicating compensation decisions to leaders, managers, employees, and candidates.
- Proven experience advising on employee relations matters, including policy interpretation, performance management, workplace concerns, documentation, and appropriate risk escalation.
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal and multi-state employment laws, including FMLA, ADA, HIPAA, ERISA, Department of Labor regulations, and state leave requirements.
- Experience administering employee benefits and leave programs while ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Strong proficiency with HRIS platforms, workforce data management, reporting, and HR analytics.
- Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to simplify complex HR topics into practical guidance for managers and employees.
- Strong decision-making skills with the confidence to determine when issues require immediate escalation and when independent resolution is appropriate.
