Lumber Sales & Shop Assistant
Cygnus Lumber & Millworks is a small, family-owned business located in the Pungo area of Southern Virginia Beach. We operate a lumber and plywood warehouse/retail outlet along with a custom millwork shop. We supply domestic and exotic hardwoods, plywood, and millwork services to both the general public and professional cabinet and furniture shops.

Position Overview
We are seeking a reliable and knowledgeable Lumber Sales & Shop Assistant to join our team. This role is a combination of customer-facing sales and hands-on shop/warehouse work. The ideal candidate will have prior woodworking experience, strong customer service skills, and a commitment to safety and organization.
Key Responsibilities
Lumber Sales (Primary Role)
- Assist customers with product selection from our inventory of domestic and exotic hardwoods and plywood
- Answer customer questions and provide knowledgeable recommendations
- Accurately identify lumber species and calculate board footage
- Prepare and process sales invoices
Millwork Shop Support
- Assist with fabrication of millwork products including:
- Table and countertop surfaces
- Mantels
- Stair treads and newel posts
- Moldings and custom components
- Operate woodworking equipment safely and efficiently
- Higher compensation available for demonstrated proficiency with shop equipment
Warehouse Operations
- Sort, tally, and organize lumber inventory
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe warehouse environment
- Safely operate a forklift (or willingness to learn)
General Duties
- Maintain cleanliness of shop and yard (housekeeping)
- Perform basic preventative maintenance (PM) on equipment
- Follow all company safety procedures and best practices
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a woodworking or millwork shop environment
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to identify wood species and understand lumber sizing/volumes
- Comfortable working in both indoor shop and outdoor yard environments
- Forklift experience preferred (or ability to be trained)
- Dependable with reliable transportation
Work Schedule & Compensation
- Full-time position
- Current schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Some flexibility available for the right candidate
- Compensation based on experience and skill level, with higher pay for advanced shop capabilities
Pay: $18.00 – $25.00 per hour
