Male Life Skills Mentor / Support Aide (6–8 hrs/day)

Job Summary

We are seeking a calm, mature, and dependable Male Life Skills Mentor / Support Aide to support an autistic teenager in building independence, communication skills, emotional regulation, and daily living abilities.

This is a high-trust, long-term support role focused on consistent relationship-building, structured daily support, and meaningful engagement in both home and community settings.

The teen communicates using an alternative communication method and requires patient, steady, non-directive support that prioritizes understanding, autonomy, and emotional regulation over instruction or correction.

This is a hands-on, active role requiring emotional steadiness, practical judgment, and reliability over credentials.

Location

Palo Alto (home + community-based support)

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent one-on-one daily support in structured routines and activities
  • Support independence in hygiene, organization, and daily living skills
  • Encourage practical life skills (including cooking)
  • Support alternative communication methods with patience and respect
  • Assist with learning activities (reading, writing, structured educational engagement)
  • Support emotional regulation and calmness
  • Facilitate community outings, errands, and structured activities

Candidate Profile (Critical Fit Criteria)

We are looking for someone who is:

  • emotionally steady under pressure
  • patient with slow or non-traditional communication
  • comfortable in active, hands-on support roles
  • grounded, practical, and consistent in daily behavior
  • able to build trust slowly and respectfully over time
  • naturally calm rather than reactive or directive

Preferred Background

  • experience supporting autistic individuals or developmental disabilities
  • background in caregiving, coaching, youth mentorship, or behavioral support
  • experience in structured environments requiring emotional regulation
  • strong practical life skills (cooking, routines, organization, physical activity)
  • individuals seeking long-term, meaningful relational work

Formal degrees are not required. Emotional regulation and reliability are the primary selection criteria.

Physical Requirements

The individual supported is a larger, physically active teenager. The role requires comfort supporting movement, transitions, and occasional behaviors, with a consistent focus on safety, calm presence, and appropriate physical assistance when needed.

Driving Requirement

  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Reliable vehicle required
  • Clean driving record required
  • Ability to provide transportation to community activities and appointments

Schedule

  • 6–8 hours per day
  • weekday schedule with flexibility
  • long-term consistency strongly preferred

Compensation

  • $68–78/hour depending on experience and fit
  • stable, ongoing role

Hiring Requirements

Selected candidates will complete standard onboarding including:

  • background clearance
  • employment eligibility verification
  • payroll onboarding documentation
  • program authorization requirements
