We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Operator to support cargo handling and terminal operations at a military cargo port facility. The MHE Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of forklifts, container handlers, rough terrain forklifts, and other cargo-handling equipment used to load, unload, transport, and stage military cargo.
This position plays a critical role in supporting military readiness by ensuring cargo, equipment, vehicles, containers, and mission-essential supplies are handled safely, accurately, and efficiently. The ideal candidate will have experience operating heavy material handling equipment in port, terminal, logistics, warehouse, military, or industrial environments while maintaining strict adherence to safety and security requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of material handling equipment, including forklifts, container handlers, reach stackers, rough terrain forklifts, and related cargo-handling equipment.
- Load, unload, transport, stack, and stage containers, palletized cargo, vehicles, and oversized equipment.
- Support vessel, truck, and terminal cargo operations in accordance with established operating procedures.
- Perform pre-operational inspections and routine operator maintenance checks on assigned equipment.
- Identify and report equipment deficiencies, safety hazards, and maintenance requirements.
- Verify cargo markings, documentation, and load configurations prior to movement.
- Ensure proper cargo handling techniques are followed to prevent damage to cargo, equipment, and facilities.
- Assist with cargo inventory, yard organization, and terminal housekeeping activities.
- Comply with all applicable safety, environmental, security, and operational procedures.
- Support surge operations, military exercises, deployments, and contingency operations as required.
- Maintain accurate operational records and complete required documentation.
- Coordinate with supervisors, signalmen, gearmen, crane operators, stevedores, and terminal personnel during cargo operations.
- Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and operational briefings.
Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed based on operational requirements and the employee’s qualifications, certifications, and experience.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license
- Valid training and certification to operate powered industrial trucks in accordance with OSHA requirements.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations applicable to powered industrial trucks, material handling, and workplace safety.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating material handling equipment in a port, terminal, warehouse, logistics, military, construction, or industrial environment.
- Experience operating forklifts with lifting capacities exceeding 10,000 pounds preferred.
- Ability to safely handle containerized, palletized, breakbulk, and oversized cargo.
- Knowledge of cargo handling safety procedures and load securement practices.
- Ability to read and understand cargo documentation, operating instructions, and safety procedures.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting military cargo operations.
- Experience working at a maritime terminal, cargo port, or military installation.
- Current forklift, heavy equipment, or material handling equipment certifications.
- Experience handling hazardous materials or ammunition and explosives (A&E) cargo.
- Familiarity with military logistics and transportation operations.
- Experience operating container handlers, reach stackers, or rough terrain forklifts.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, and perform physical activities for extended periods.
- Ability to safely enter and exit heavy equipment multiple times throughout a shift.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in outdoor environments, including heat, rain, wind, and maritime conditions.
- Ability to maintain situational awareness in active cargo handling areas.
Security Requirements
- Must be able to pass a background investigation and obtain installation access credentials.
- Must comply with all military installation security requirements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain applicable access credentials, badges, and permits required for port operations.
Work Schedule
- Full-time position.
- May require shift work, weekends, holidays, overtime, and extended hours during vessel operations, military exercises, deployments, and surge requirements.
- Position may support 24/7/365 operations.
