Job Summary
Join our dynamic team as a Natural Resource Technician and play a vital role in performing natural areas stewardship duties on homeowners association’s common property (greenspace). Tasks include invasive species management, brush and tree clearing, trail maintenance, prescribed fire, and all other responsibilities as directed by the Natural Resources Manager. Your work will directly contribute to sustainable land management, habitat preservation, and environmental compliance. Duties

  • Stewardship of prairie, savanna, woodland, and wetland restoration sites, including invasive species management, install native seed, herbaceous plants, and woody plants, and prescribed burns. This entails knowledge of plant communities in the upper Midwest, the use of small engine equipment (chainsaw, brushsaw, leaf blower), herbicide sprayers, and hand tools.
  • Perform brush or tree clearing and build/manage burn piles, especially during winter months when ground is frozen or snow-covered.
  • Participate on a prescribed burn crew to safely and effectively apply fire to Greenspace restoration sites.
  • Plant identification knowledge, including native and invasive herbaceous and woody species.
  • Invasive species knowledge and control methods, including hand pulling, mowing, and herbicide application. Mowing operations may include hand-held brushsaws or mid-sized tractor.
  • Maintenance of trails, including cleanup of fallen trees, maintain appropriate clearance for equestrian and pedestrian use, etc. Work with Maintenance Department personnel on trail repairs and enhancements. Occasional periodic mowing or minor repairs may be needed. This includes operation of tractors and/or skid steers.
  • Lead volunteers during workdays at restoration sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences (botany, conservation, natural resources, forestry, ecology, etc.) and 1 year field experience preferred. Additional relevant field experience can substitute for a college degree.
  • Ability to identify and distinguish native and non-native plants.
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, lift and carry 50+ pounds, and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must obtain Illinois Pesticide Operator’s License and NWCG S130/S190 Wildfire Training Certification.

Pay: $20.00 – $21.00 per hour
