ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Solid Waste Superintendent supports the Solid Waste Diversion and Disposal Division (SWDD), which manages post collection processing of refuse, green organics, and recyclables, as well as capital projects and environmental compliance across multiple transfer stations, recycling facilities, a compost site, an active landfill and five closed landfills.

Assigned to one of three post collection campuses, the Superintendent provides operational leadership, oversees site-related budgets, ensures environmental compliance, and manages site related contracts. The role directly supervises Solid Waste Supervisors, Solid Waste Foremen, and support staff, and works collaboratively with other SWDD Superintendents to meet division goals.

This position operates with significant independence and reports to a Solid Waste Deputy Public Works Director or higher.


SALARY

Pay Range: $95,451.20 to $134,326.40 annually.

Hiring Range: $95,451.20 to $110,510.40 annually.

Please understand that this is pay grade 068. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of supervisory and administrative experience in a large solid waste collection, disposal, or regulatory enforcement operation.
  • AND Associate’s degree in public or environmental health, business or public administration, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Experience with:

  • Managing infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Managing Post-collection environmental permits and regulations.
  • Resolving customer and staff conflict.
  • Post-collection solid waste operations including landfills, transfer stations, material recycling facilities and compost facilities.
  • Supervising multiple levels of staff.
  • Creating and maintaining statistical reports and trend analysis.
  • Preparing and monitoring budgets.
  • Working with labor union groups.
  • Enforcing Solid Waste Chapter 27.
