Position Summary
The Metal Sign Painter / Paint Prep Technician is responsible for preparing metal sign components for painting and applying high-quality finishes to ensure a professional appearance and long-term durability. This position involves surface preparation, masking, painting, quality inspection, and maintaining a safe and organized paint department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare metal sign cabinets, channel letters, structural components, and fabricated parts for painting.
- Sand, grind, clean, and degrease surfaces to ensure proper paint adhesion.
- Apply body filler and perform minor surface repairs as needed.
- Mask and protect surfaces not requiring paint.
- Mix paints, primers, and coatings according to manufacturer specifications.
- Apply primers, base coats, and finish coats using spray equipment and other approved methods.
- Maintain consistent color matching and finish quality.
- Inspect painted components for defects and perform touch-ups as necessary.
- Operate and maintain paint booth equipment, spray guns, and related tools.
- Monitor paint inventory and notify supervisors of material requirements.
- Follow all safety procedures regarding paint handling, personal protective equipment (PPE), and hazardous materials.
- Maintain a clean and organized paint area and work environment.
- Assist with loading, unloading, and movement of materials as required.
- Support production schedules to ensure on-time project completion.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous industrial, automotive, manufacturing, or sign painting experience preferred.
- Experience operating HVLP spray equipment preferred.
- Knowledge of paint preparation techniques, primers, and industrial coatings.
- Ability to read work orders and follow detailed instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, reach, climb, and work around large fabricated components.
- Ability to wear respirators and required PPE.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
Preferred Experience
- Sign industry experience.
- Automotive body and paint experience.
- Powder coating experience.
- Knowledge of aluminum, steel, and fabricated metal finishing processes.

Pay: $16.00 – $20.00 per hour
