The City of Commerce City is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Planning Technician to join our Community Development team. This entry-level position plays a key role in supporting a wide range of community development activities—from project research to administrative coordination. In this role, you will support various planning-related tasks. You will perform essential clerical and administrative duties to keep the department running smoothly while coordinating daily support for the Director, Deputy Director, and Planning Manager. Additionally, you will help prepare materials, organize meetings, and facilitate communication for the Board of Adjustment, Planning Commission, and City Council, ensuring that each group receives timely and accurate information.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree in Planning, Land Use, Geography, or related field from an accredited college or university. An equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Handles initial intake of new land use applications, including review for completeness and preparing of vicinity maps
- Provides information and assistance to the general public and applicants and provides a professional source of information concerning planning requirements and issues through planner-of-the-day duties
- Handles day-to-day functions of entry-level case organization, preparation of graphic illustrations, maps, newspaper notices, posting, and mailing materials, and supports the implementation and maintenance of the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development code
- Assists with or coordinates Pre-Application meetings
- Creates agendas for the Development Review Team and Executive Development Review Team
- Performs periodic on-site planning inspections
- Reviews business licenses, building permits, temporary use permits, short term rentals, miscellaneous permits, and organized event permit applications for conformance with approved development plans and the Land Development Code
- Maintains confidentiality of development projects when necessary
- Produces and maintains all applicable materials and handouts (Facts-to-Know) for distribution to the general public and developers regarding various Planning requirements
- Helps to prepare sign posting documents related to land use cases
- Researches, writes and coordinates responses for zoning verification and non-conforming use letters and prepares special projects as assigned
- Oversees cataloging and review of property case conditions to ensure compliance
- Handles simple land use cases, such as Outdoor Storage Permits or Administrative Adjustments, Limited Use Permits on occasion
- Covers occasional evening public meetings
- Performs other duties as assigned
Pay: $25.99 – $28.88 per hour
