RETAIL GARDENER — MANAGER: Full-Time | $24–$26/hour based on experience[email protected]
ABOUT US: Rooted in the Chestnut Hill community since 1984, Laurel Hill Gardens connects people with plants and fosters a love of gardening that reflects the character of our neighborhood. We’re looking for a motivated, experienced leader to help guide our team and grow with us.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Manager works closely with ownership to lead our retail team, contribute to plant sourcing, and ensure every customer experience reflects the warmth and expertise our shop is known for. Schedule: Tue–Thu 9:30 AM–5:00 PM and Sat–Sun 9:30 AM–7:00 PM (hours may vary seasonally). Opening and closing is delegated between staff.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Leadership & Operations Lead, mentor, and motivate a small team of retail gardeners : Assist with scheduling, task delegation, and day-to-day coordination
Act as point of contact in the absence of ownership: Handle opening/closing including cash reconciliation and shop walk-through
Plant Sourcing & Care Evaluate inventory levels and assist with ordering from growers and wholesalers: Research and recommend new varieties and seasonal offerings
Oversee plant health, display presentation, and pest/disease monitoring: Manage seasonal transitions in greenhouse, indoor, and outdoor sections
Customer Service & Sales Provide expert plant advice tailored to each customer’s goals and experience: Build genuine relationships with our loyal customer base and the broader community
Handle escalated customer concerns with professionalism and care: REQUIREMENTS Retail experience in a garden center, nursery, or comparable setting strongly preferred
Solid foundational knowledge of plants, horticulture, and gardening practices: Strong leadership, interpersonal, and customer service skills
Comfortable with opening/closing responsibilities and cash handling: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Flexible availability including weekends: PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Prior supervisory or lead experience in a retail or horticultural setting
Experience with plant ordering, vendor relationships, or inventory management: Familiarity with native plants, organic gardening, or regionally appropriate horticulture
Connection to the Chestnut Hill and greater Philadelphia gardening community Coursework or certification in horticulture or landscape design a plus.
