Seasonal Trap Assistant

Lake County Vector Control District (LCVCD) – Lakeport, CA

Salary: $20.00 per hour

Job Type: Full-time, Seasonal (40 hours/week, June through Sept, with possibility of continued employment depending on District needs)

Schedule: Generally Mon–Fri, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (May be adjusted based on District needs)

About the Role

Are you looking for hands-on experience in public health, biology, or environmental science? The Lake County Vector Control District (LCVCD) is seeking a Seasonal Trap Assistant to support our mission of protecting public health through the surveillance and control of mosquitoes, ticks, and other vectors.

This position is based in Lakeport and involves driving a District vehicle throughout Lake County to set and retrieve insect traps, assist with sentinel chicken care, and related duties. College-level coursework and/or experience in biology is preferred but not required. This is an excellent "stepping stone" role for anyone interested in a career in vector control or public health.

What You Will Do

  • Field Operations: Safely operate a District vehicle to various locations in Lake County to set and retrieve mosquito and insect traps.
  • Physical Activity: Hike over uneven ground, climb small obstacles, and traverse fields, hillsides, and stream beds while carrying mosquito traps.
  • Data Management: Maintain accurate handwritten records and electronic records of surveillance data.
  • Communication: Coordinate with supervisors via cellular phone and engage professionally with members of the public.
  • Maintenance: Assist with general upkeep, including repairing traps, cleaning mosquitofish tanks, washing vehicles, and maintaining lab workspaces.
  • Safety: Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Driver’s License: Must possess a valid California driver’s license and be insurable by the District’s carrier (DMV record check required).
  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Education/Experience: College-level coursework in biology and related sciences and/or experience in a biology lab or fieldwork is preferred but not required.
  • Communication: Must be able to speak, read, and write effectively in English.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift objects weighing over 30 lbs.
  • Ability to regularly bend, reach overhead, and occasionally climb ladders or fences.
  • Ability to operate small tools and parts.
  • Specific vision requirements (measurable depth perception) and hearing requirements (minimum of single ear aided hearing).

Benefits & Duration

  • Duration: Funded through September 30, with a possible extension into October.
  • Benefits: Paid Sick Leave and Workers’ Compensation are provided. There may be opportunities for overtime
