TEACHER OF THE DEAF/HARD OF HEARING DISTRICT-WIDEOne (1) Full-time Vacancy: 35 hours per week Monday through Friday: School Year schedule Salary: Teacher Contract Unit A: based on education level and experience Start date: August 24, 2026 DEFINITION: To assist teaching students who are deaf or hard of hearing and use ASL to communicate. This teacher will work collaboratively with a Special Education Teacher, as well as Related Service Providers and General Education Teachers to support students with academic skills, life skills, social skills and transitional activities in both the inclusion and resource room settings. Duties & responsibilities: Providing direct academic instruction to individual and/or small groups of students in both academic and social settings throughout the school dayProviding specialist support options to enable children with hearing loss equity of access to the curriculumPromoting language development by providing a range of communication modalities and strategiesModifying and adapting curriculum in conjunction with the Special Education teacherCreating a safe classroom space that fosters learning, student engagement, and accountabilityCollaborating with both district and outside team members (i.e., related service providers, program staff, general education teachers, as well as families)Providing case management and collaborating with the Special Education teacher to write and implement IEPsAdministering formal educational and progress monitoring assessments to inform instruction practiceObtaining and reviewing updated medical/audiological information pertaining to the students performance and probable use of hearingCreating positive attitudes towards individuals with hearing loss within the school communityPromoting a proactive partnership with the students to develop their self-esteem and encourage positive attitudes toward learning Supporting communication and linguistic development through spoken language and/or sign languageMonitoring the condition and use of appropriate technological equipment/software for studentsEducating staff on use and maintenance of technological equipment/softwareDemonstrating knowledge and skills in the areas of language development and language refinement needed by hearing impaired childrenQualifications and Skills: DESE License as a Teacher of the Deaf required. Certification as an American Sign Language Interpreter preferred.Experience with and commitment to inclusion that benefits students socially, emotionally and academicallyExperience working with students who have varied profiles and disabilities including but not limited to deaf or hard of hearing, mild/moderate academic learning disabilities, emotional impairment, attention / hyperactivity, autism, social cognition, and other atypical learner profilesExperience with a diverse population of students within a multi-cultural school / community Strong ability to analyze data to assess growth and program efficacy, as well as to develop programs with measurable outcomesStrong positive, interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with students, staff, administration and familiesStrong ability to work as a member of a professional learning community and multi-disciplinary teamHighly effective oral and written communication skills that promote and encourage collaboration with colleagues, parents, and administratorsStrong ability to multi-task and work within a fast-paced environment Highly effective executive function skills, which include being well organized, strong time management skills, and the ability to work independently to meet time linesPractices in accordance with federal, state and local laws that relate to students and families i.e., child protection, special education and 504, attendance and confidentiality (REQUIRED)Candidates who are bicultural/bilingual (Spanish/English) are strongly encouraged to apply Benefits: All Benefits and privileges are consistent with the Northampton Association of School Employees (NASE) Teachers Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement.
If Hired: MA DESE License Certification as a Teacher of Deaf/hard of hearing required. Official University/College Transcripts required. Must have acceptable MA CORI and SAFIS National Fingerprint Background Checks prior to employment.
