THE POSITION
As a Tunnel Maintainer with the Department of Transportation, you help keep tunnels clean, safe and ready for daily travel. This position provides active, meaningful work that supports smooth traffic flow. You will work with equipment, respond to incidents, and assist travelers when needed. Your dedication helps maintain reliable transportation for the public.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position focuses on tunnel maintenance, incident response, and traffic monitoring to support safe and efficient travel. As a Tunnel Maintainer, you will perform the following duties:
Tunnel Maintenance: Clean drainage areas, facilities, and grounds while making basic repairs
Incident Response: Remove debris, assist motorists, and restore normal traffic conditions
Condition Monitoring: Watch for traffic issues, carbon monoxide levels, and over-height vehicles
Clear Communication: Coordinate with staff and first responders by phone, radio, and direct contact
Equipment Operation: Use wash trucks, towing equipment, and tools for maintenance tasks

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment, rotating 24/7 operations.
- Work hours are varied and are based upon operational considerations. Shifts can range from the following: 9:30 PM – 5:30 AM; 5:30 AM – 1:30 PM; 1:30 PM – 9:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Travel, overtime, and shift work required.
Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $52,097 (before taxes).- You will receive further communication regarding this position via email. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- All employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
- All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.
- All employees must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
- All positions in this job require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment during the probationary period.
