Vice President of Energy Trading – Job DescriptionPosition Summary
The Vice President of Energy Trading is responsible for leading the organization’s energy trading activities across power, natural gas, oil, and/or renewable energy markets. This role oversees trading strategy, portfolio optimization, and risk management to maximize profitability while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The VP drives market positioning, builds trading capabilities, and leads high-performing trading teams.
Key ResponsibilitiesTrading Strategy & Market Leadership
- Develop and execute trading strategies across energy commodities (power, gas, oil, renewables, carbon credits)
- Analyze market trends, supply-demand dynamics, and pricing signals to inform trading decisions
- Optimize trading portfolios to maximize returns while managing exposure
Trading Operations & Execution
- Oversee daily trading activities, including physical and financial trading
- Ensure efficient trade execution across exchanges, OTC markets, and bilateral contracts
- Manage positions, hedging strategies, and arbitrage opportunities
Risk Management & Compliance
- Establish and enforce risk management frameworks (market, credit, liquidity risks)
- Monitor trading limits, Value at Risk (VaR), and stress scenarios
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., FERC, CFTC, EMIR, Dodd-Frank where applicable)
Portfolio & Asset Optimization
- Integrate trading strategies with physical assets (generation, storage, transportation)
- Optimize asset dispatch and energy flows to enhance profitability
- Collaborate with asset management and operations teams
Team Leadership & Talent Development
- Lead and mentor trading teams, including traders, analysts, and risk managers
- Build a high-performance, results-driven trading culture
- Oversee hiring, training, and performance management
Stakeholder & Counterparty Management
- Build and maintain relationships with key counterparties, brokers, and exchanges
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders (finance, legal, risk, operations)
- Represent the company in market forums and industry discussions
Technology & Analytics
- Drive the adoption of trading platforms, analytics tools, and algorithmic trading capabilities
- Leverage data analytics and quantitative models to enhance trading decisions
- Ensure system integrity and real-time reporting capabilities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or related field (MBA preferred)
- 15+ years of experience in energy trading, commodities trading, or related markets
- Proven track record of managing profitable trading portfolios
- Deep knowledge of energy markets, derivatives, and trading instruments
- Strong understanding of risk management methodologies and regulatory frameworks
- Experience leading trading teams in a fast-paced environment
