Job Title: Back to School Mentor

Overview: The Back to School Mentor will work with students at McCaskey High School who have reached the 6–10 unexcused absence threshold. Through mentorship, case management, and individualized support, the mentor will help students improve their attendance and reconnect with school. The mentor will work closely with students, families, school staff, and community partners to understand the barriers causing absenteeism and develop plans to address them. This may include assisting with transportation, family communication, basic needs, school engagement, or other challenges affecting attendance. The goal of the role is to build relationships, connect students and families to resources, and provide the support needed to help students get back on track before attendance concerns escalate further.

  • Maintain a caseload of 20–35 students identified as at risk for chronic absenteeism.
  • Meet regularly with students and families to build relationships, assess needs, set goals, and monitor progress.
  • Develop and implement individualized attendance improvement plans.
  • Identify barriers to attendance and connect students and families to appropriate supports and resources.

  • Conduct school meetings, family meetings, and home visits when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, Home School Visitors, attendance teams, and community partners.
  • Help students connect school attendance to their future goals, career interests, and opportunities.
  • Attend truancy court proceedings when necessary and provide updates to court and school partners.
  • Continue supporting students and families throughout the intervention process and beyond.
  • Maintain accurate case notes, attendance records, intervention plans, and required reports in a timely manner.

For All Staff Members in each Program:

  • Interact with Donors and Volunteers when you see them
  • Use program resources wisely
  • Stepping in and assisting in any program as needed
  • Be willing to jump into another program not assigned to you and help in, if requested and if you see a need.
  • Cleaning up any space that you or the program you are apart of has used
  • Each employee must keep up with proper usage and maintenance of any Bench Mark owned vehicle (Ford Transit, Honda CRV, Bench Mark Van)
  • Fill up the gas tank if it at a quarter tank when you are using it
  • Clean out the vehicle once you are done using it
  • Let the Directors, Executive Assistant, or Executive Director if there is an issue with one of the vehicles

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in mentoring, case management, education, juvenile justice, or youth development.
  • Experience conducting home visits and family engagement.
  • Knowledge of Lancaster County resources and service providers.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Experience working with youth and families.
  • Ability to build relationships with diverse populations.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Suspension Alternative Program Manager.

Hours for Role:

  • During the School Year:
  • Mondays through Fridays: 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM
  • During the Summer:
  • Flexible Hours (Must reach 40 hours each week)

Compensation: $52,000 annually

Pay: $52,000.00 per year
